04/21/09 Weigh In Day

Well, today is the 21st, and if you haven't noticed, I didn't post anything for my Weigh In day yesterday. I had a bad food and health weekend. Friday night I had 10 chicken wings and a regular order of ranch fries. Which, I thought was no big deal, but this meal triggered in me an appetite for other bad crap. Now, the health part. Saturday, I woke up with a terrible sore throat. I tried throat spray and gargling hot salt water. There was no relief. Then Sunday, I still had the sore throat. Monday, the sore throat went away and now my sinuses were stuffed up and I was coughing up nasty stuff. So on Mon. I went to the doc and found out I have a sinus infection. Now I'm on antibiotics and taking it easy at home. Also, my left ear is starting to throb. So I might be getting an ear infection to boot. It's a two for one special.

Now the embarrassing food part: I ate all that I could find to stop the sore throat pain this weekend. Of course non of it worked. I ate a lot of my salty trail mix. Well, when I say a lot, I mean I ate the whole damn bag. There were a few occasions where I consumed a teaspoon of honey to try and relieve the pain. Also, I didn't follow my food schedule, I just ate.

And another thing, I must confess that I weighed last week. I really want to weigh just once a month, but I find it hard. I might switch over to twice a month. This is a compromise between the weekly and monthly thing. I feel ashamed of myself because I have been doing so well, but once I feel better I will start walking and swimming again. I hope to swim again on Friday. This reminds me, I skipped swimming last Friday for no good reason. I felt fine, but my excuse was “I'm tired”.

Tomorrow, I start following my food schedule again.

Now for the weigh in: last Thursday I weighed 582, but on my official weigh in day I weighed 592. Thus, I ballooned up 10 pounds in 2 days. I really believe majority of that weight is fluid. I know I ate some bad stuff, but not enough to gain 10 pounds. Who knows, maybe I'm in denial.

Tomorrow I start my daily posting again with my list of food that I ate. To me, it gets boring, but it produces great results. Once I feel better, I think I will also give that personal trainer a call. See what she can help me out with.

I had some great news at the docs office. My BP was 132/80. I noticed though that they manually checked my BP and I was sitting down. Normally I stand and they use an automated machine. I've heard that it's best to get your BP checked sitting down.

What do you think I could have done to prevent this bad weekend from happening? I want to be disciplined and never stray from my plan.

  1. First of all, let's start with the fact that you are moving in the right direction overall. I really like weighing in once a week. A weekly weigh in gives me an easily defined time frame to measure against. Most weeks I do well, and I can look back to see what I did that worked. On the weeks that I did bad (like last week being up 5.4 lbs), I can just put them to bed and feel like I am starting over fresh. I feel like it gives me more opportunity to do the right thing. You'll have setbacks. They happen. You can't let it get to you. I knew I wasn't doing the best thing for myself by eating Jack in the Box this weekend, but I did it anyway. So now that week is over and this week is going to be a success.

That being said, don't skimp on the exercise. We all run into situations where we eat poorly, but there is not really an excuse not to move more. I ate some shit this weekend that I shouldn't have, but I made sure I got my steps in. I have made exercise into a game that I play against myself and friends. I hate to lose so I get up and put one foot in front of the other.

You're are doing well. Keep it up. Try to get a little better everyday.

  2. Hey, you've lost 40 pounds! That's great. The best advice I can give you is to forgive yourself when you slip up and get back on your program. We all slip up here and there. If you try to "never" go off your plan, you'll end up feeling deprived and you'll have more bad days. Allow yourself indulgences now and again, just track them along with everything else, so when you have a week where you didn't lose as much as you'd like, you'll know why.
I also agree with Jared. Keep moving (exercise is your friend!) and consider weighing in once a week. Sometimes the weight loss seems slower this way, but it helps to keep you on track when you weigh in each week. When I have a bad week, I've only lost a few days....the scale motivates me to get back on the ball.
Most important, be proud of what you've accomplished, and keep up the good work!

  3. Hmm, never say never! I think most people go off plan on occasion, such as a holiday or celebration. It happens. The important bit is to forgive yourself and get right back on track. Don't let an off plan moment or day snowball into days or weeks.

Don't feel guilty or ashamed. Maybe weighing once a month is too far apart to keep motivated? At any rate, don't waste your energy feeling negative feelings towards yourself. It doesn't help you. Save your energy for the pool!

  4. I don't know that there is a definative answer to prevention except practice... I think that the only advice to give to someone who trips is to get up RIGHT NOW! Make the moment better. Don't wait until Monday...

I have something called a relapse prevention plan that I can share with you... I will explain it via email. It is an amazing tool that can be applied to any impulsive/destructive behavior you want to prevent. I am not at home at this moment. If you are interested email me (you have the address) so I remember.
